Shock of the Nude
Updated: Oct 8

Starting a Pre-diploma Art Course in the 1960s, introduced me to Life Drawing and Painting from a real model whereas previously I had, as a teenage schoolboy, only studied the two-dimensional, monochrome naked females in naturist magazines. Since it was by then taboo for artists to copy from pictures, it was an initial a jolt to see pubic hair rather than an airbrushed white triangle – much like the shock of John Ruskin on his wedding night. The sensation did not deter me and I have depicted the female nude for more than 65 years and make no apologies for wanting work from the figure as nature has intended. Even in the Covid. I would not do any drawing from online.
